Proverbs 22:6 (Screenplay)

“Proverbs 22:6” is based on the horrific misdeeds of Gary Heidnik, a psychotic army veteran who abducted a series of women, enslaved them in his basement, and attempted to impregnate them in the deluded belief that society owed him a family.

Heidnik had a rough childhood, but any liberal tendency to excuse his behavior would be misguided. Although many of our most cherished institutions failed him – marriage, family, the military, and the mental health system – Heidnik was clearly a sadistic man. He fell through the cracks in society until it was too late, and when his crimes finally came to light it became apparent that his victims had fallen through the cracks also. The women that he abducted and killed were black and poor; and except for their immediate families, no one seemed to care that they had gone missing. For those and other reasons, Heidnik’s story says a great deal about race in America and is still relevant to this day.

A reader for the Black List (a script-sharing website for industry professionals), evaluated the script in the following terms: “The rise and fall of deranged psychopaths can lead to gripping story telling and box office success if the lead is layered with flaws like Crasnick. Crasnick feels like Jake Gyllenhaal’s insane, manipulative character in “Nightcrawler,” which led to much recognition of Gyllenhaal for his performance. This could attract talent of that caliber.”

Mean Thoughts (Screenplay)

Steve’s adaptation of his novel, “Mean Thoughts,” tells the story of Mark Glassman, a young man who pretends to be a womanizer, fooling everyone but himself.

A former development executive with ABC, Viacom, and Cablevision, had this to say about the novel: “The telling of your life and times with each of these women adds up to great casting possibilities, and you could do this on a low budget. Your main character’s admiration for other men shows his flaws and what he has to do to get over his low self-esteem. This is the element that you should latch onto as your selling point and make it a franchise.”

An award-winning filmmaker who has written and directed for Nickelodeon, Time Warner Cable, and the Independent Film Channel, weighed in with the following: “Dear Steve: You are a great writer. I can’t even remember how this script ended up on my desk, or who the hell you are, but it’s a helluva script. Completely original and funny and touching. It’s the best thing I’ve read in ages. Congratulations on writing something so fresh. Great title, too.”
